Duffield Village News - July 2010 Edition (In brief) SOS...SAVE OUR SHOPKEEPERS A rallying cry has been made to  save any more businesses from closure due to the gas and water pipe-laying disruptive road works in the village over the next few months. Villagers are being urged to shop  as usual  despite the total closure of the A6 for two months starting on July 5th. Duffield Parish Council and Duffield Community Association have each appealed to the community to help the village stores becoming beset with  financial difficulties. "We don't want a 'ghost village'. The people who provide much needed services in Duffield deserve our backing in what is a perilous time for them," said Derek Cook, secretary of the Community Association. Gifted, a speciality store on Town Street, is the first victim of the road closure for the gas mains replacement work. Owner Kate Hambleton, who started business in Duffield two years ago, was laying the bedrock for success when the news of the road closure was revealed. "This year business was hit by the recession but we were getting through when this news hit us.  It was devastating.  It was decision time and the loss of trade I anticipated tipped the scale against continuing," said Kate. Gifted has closed but Kate, who has been bombarded by e-mails and letters of sympathy from customers throughout the area, is continuing to do business on a soon to be completed website and at various stores in the area. Despite the typographical error which had an entrance fee of £4 instead of £1 in last month's Scene, Meadows School PTFA report the Meadows Fair was a success with great music and they give heartfelt thanks to those who helped  make the event so good. "I don't think the error effected the numbers," said a spokesperson. YOUTH FACILITY A MASSIVE SUCCESS It has been just over a year since Massive officially opened and since then over 370 different young people have dropped in to use the facility, with an average of 32 attending each night Massive is open. Massive has recently launched its website (massiveduffield.co.uk) and the project continues to go from strength to strength after recently receiving  further funding to help continue its vital service to the village. Massive continues to open every Monday night 4-7pm for those aged 11-14 (years 7- 9) and every Friday night 7- 10pm for those aged 14-18 (years 10-13). Record Breakers Ecclesbourne year11 have now won the Derbyshire County Rugby Cup for5 consecutive years. Their latest championship was against a very strong Queen Elizabeth Grammar School from Ashbourne. In a very close first half Ecclesbourne final broke the deadlock just before half time with a fantastic solo try from Sam Martin to make it 5-0 at the interval. The reigning champions then pulled away in the second half with further tries from Jake Roome, Lewis Madeley and Luke Frixou. QUEG's pulled a try back towards the end making the final score 29 - 5. Sun shines throughout Community Week (Article by Derek Cook - DCA) The tone was set for Community Week when the Vicarage Garden Party acted as host for the crowning of this year's Carnival Princess, Rebecca Fenton. Rebecca looked really cool in her ice blue dress as she was crowed, attended by Megan Grace and Daisy Williamson. A full and varied programme of music was performed during the evening. The Meadows School Summer Fair followed the next day to continue the festivities.  Monday saw the running of the 25th Duffield '5'organised by Jerry Sharp.  There were 242 entrants and congratulations go to David Narborough who was the first local runner home in second place in the amazing time of 34 minutes and 58 seconds.  David won the under 18 class. The next four days featured what have become traditional Community Week events with the Family Barbecue and Fun Evening on Eyes Meadow, The Primary Schools Sports Spectacular, The Duffield Singers and Friends in Concert and The Family Treasure Hunt arranged by last year's winners, the Osborn family. The Stokoe family won this year's Treasure Hunt and they now have almost a year to devise the 2011 competition.     Carnival Day appeared to break all records.  There were 52 stalls booked raising funds, offering information and selling items. The Carnival Procession was even longer with 6 walking floats depicting scenes from up to 200 years ago with Duffield Baptist Church celebrating its bi-centenary.  It looked as though most of the pupils from William Gilbert School took part dressed in England's 1966 strip. The figures aren't in yet but it also appeared that the attendance was up on other years. Judy Clough opened the Carnival with a witty and touching speech and presented the Silver Leaves Club and both Women's Institutes with a personal donation for their work in the community. Chris Johnson handed a DCA cheque for £500 to the Massive Youth Project for its work with teenagers in the village. The arena events were well received with energetic displays from the Vision School of Dance, Star Steppers Cheerleaders, The Three Shires Medieval Society and the Chesterfield Musketeers Showband. Many families and groups of friends then settled down to a picnic whilst waiting for the evening band concert featuring Pigwagon, Ain't Lizzie and Chaser.  There was a variety of food on offer for those that hadn't brought their own and the bar run by Duffield Cricket Club was kept busy throughout. The Church Service brought to an end a week of strong community togetherness and the most pleasant atmosphere of Carnival Day has been remarked upon by many. The Duffield Community Association thanks all who volunteered to help in any way for their contribution be-it picking up a piece of litter, moving a chair or acting as a steward.  It also thanks all the stallholders for bringing such a wide range of activities, games, information, etc. Duffield Scene covers all these stories and more in its FREE monthly issue or log on to www.duffieldscene.co.uk where the 'Scene' can be downloaded in PDF form.
