Duffield Hall notice of sale - 19th July 1860

The notice reads as follows;

Duffield Hall, near Derby.

to be sold by auction, by

Moody and Newbold at the Bell Hotel, Derby.

on Thursday, the 19th July 1860,

at three for four o'clock punctually

an important and

Valuable Estate with the Fine Old Family Mansion

called Duffield Hall.

Situated at Duffield, in the picturesque and beautiful valley of the River Derwent, close to the line of the Midland Railway, where there is a Station, in an excellent neighbourhood, and within four miles of the County town of Derby. The Hall which is chiefly built of stone, in the Elizabethan style of Architecture, is replete with every convenience and in excellent order, and comprises of spacious Entrance Hall 20ft by 21ft 6in, Principal Staircase and Study, Dining Room 19ft by 2in, Library 15ft 9in, Closets, excellent Larders and Cellars,8 best Bedrooms, 4 Dressing rooms, Bath-room and 4 Servants' Bed-rooms. The Out-building comprise Double and single Coach-houses,Stabling for Six Horses, Saddle room,Corn Chamber, and two Servants' Bed-rooms, three excellent Loose Boxes, Gate Keeper's Lodge, other convenient erections. There is an excellent Walled Garden,well stocked with choice fruit Trees, with Greenhouses and forcing Pits,and extensive Pleasure Grounds, containing fine grow Ornamental Timber and Shrubberies. Also substantial and convenient Premises, detached, and at a convenient distance for the Hall, comprising an excellent Stone built Farm-House and Buildings with gardens and shrubberies adjoining together with cottages, buildings and* 122a. 2r.15p. Of very superior Land, Chiefly Meadow and Pasture, lying in a ring fence round the Hall. The Estate is well timbered, supplied with excellent Water, approached on sides by good Roads, and will be found one of the most dersirable Properties that could be offered to the public. Also at the same time and place ,will be offered 15 other lots of most conveniently situated and highly valuable property. Being detached portions of the Duffield Hall Estate, Comprising An Excellent Corn Mill, driven by Water and Steam Power, with Residence and Cottages detached; and various sites at Duffield and Quorndon near Derby, highly eligible for the erection of Villa residences. The whole of the Property will be sold subject to all existing rights of roads and other rights, and also subject to all charges and outgoings, whether the same be mentioned in the Particulars or otherwise, and according to Conditions to be produced at the time of sale. The Poor and Road rates are moderate, and the Land Tax at present charged, averages 9 1/4d. per acre on the whole of the Duffield Hall Estate. * Note: 122a. 2r. 15p. means 122 Acres, 2 rods,15 perch. These are old English units of measure. I believe Roland Smith bought the Hall at the auction but I have no record of the price he paid. I wonder what price it would fetch today ?
